Happy 10th, High School Musical

Can you believe it?  On this day ten years ago one of the biggest movie franchises hit Disney Channel – High School Musical.

I can’t remember the day in particular, but I remember seeing the movie with my mom and cousin… and loving it.  I remember that I was a freshman in high school, and I didn’t know it then, but the newest Disney franchise would premiere its third and final installment – High School Musical: Senior Year – during my actual senior year.  How cool is that?

Most teenagers would’ve probably been embarrassed to admit they watched High School Musical the night of its premiere because, well, it was on Disney Channel.  I learned something all those years ago… a lot of teenagers actually do watch Disney.  I get it, we grew up with the classic Disney movies – Lion King, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, etc. – so it’s not that hard to think that we still enjoyed the Disney Channel shows.

I thought High School Musical would be just like any other movie, but for the following weeks of my freshman year I often heard other students of all grades (usually girls) singing the hit songs from the movie.  In fact, I think if my high school had a drama club, we would’ve eventually put on a production of the musical.  I was not as vocal, but for weeks the only CD I listened to on the bus ride home was my HSM soundtrack (yes, I said CD).

What I really like about High School Musical is that it’s a modern-day Grease.  Don’t get me wrong, it will never replace Grease, but it’s not going away any time soon.  This is the movie nerd talking in me, but when you look at both of these movies and break them down, there are a lot of similarities.  I won’t go into details because that will just bore you, but trust me, they’re there.

So here we are, ten years after the premiere of one of Disney Channel’s biggest musicals.  I still can’t believe it’s been ten years – a good amount of my cousins weren’t even alive ten years ago!  Heck, High School Musical is older than the iPhone!  Think about that for a minute…

Yeah, exactly.

In one way it feels like the movie has been out forever, but on the other hand it feels like just yesterday I was in high school.  Weird, huh?

Is anyone going to watch the cast reunion on Disney tonight during the movie?  I might.  I think it’s awesome they’re doing that, but it bugs me that Zac Efron isn’t a part of it.. oh well.

Happy 10th Anniversary High School Musical!

Life With a Rare Name

You already know this, unless you’re new here, but my name is Tabitha.

rare name

It’s an easy, yet rare name.  I’m the only Tabitha I know… in person anyway.  There are a few bloggers I have come across bearing the same name.  I think it’s pretty awesome that the only way I’ve met people with the same name as me was through the Internet.  Just think, if the Internet didn’t exist, I would still be the only Tabitha I know.

Going through life with a rare name is great.  You don’t have to go through all that chaos of sharing a name with 3-4 of your classmates or coworkers.  You can say my name in a room full of people and I know you’re talking to me, no one else.  In fact, I was the only one with my name in school, grades K-12.  How cool is that?  In fifth grade I won this school-wide contest and when the principal butchered my last name during the announcement, I still knew he was talking about me since, well, I was the only Tabitha in the entire school.

I get a lot of compliments about my name.  I also get asked if my parents were Bewitched fans.  I’m not quite sure if they were, but they did know of the show and the baby witch Tabitha who moved things by wiggling her nose.  I have actually never seen the show, but I’ve been told about it, because of my name.  I believe it was the popularity of the show that caused the name to break into the top 1000 most popular girls’ names in the mid-1960s, though it’s never gotten into the top 100.

Fun fact: the name Tabitha reached peak popularity in 1978,
ranking #126 of most popular girls' names.

For the most part, I associate my name with the Bible.  In fact, when my mom told her uncle what my name was he said, “What a nice Bible name.”  Go figure, my mom forgot it was even a Bible name, but with good reason.  The name Tabitha comes from the Aramaic language, which is one of the main translations of the Bible, however in the Greek translations of the Bible my name was translated as Dorcas.  The latter was the name my mom was familiar with reading in her past versions of the Bible.

If I had the choice, would I rename myself?

Heck, no.

I love my name, and not just because it’s a rare one.  I just can’t imagine having any other name really.  It fits my personality and I think if I had any other name, it just wouldn’t sound right.  I think my parents did an excellent job naming me, both my first and middle names.

If You Knew Me In High School…

I was inspired by Karli at September Farm to do this post.  It’s an interesting take on a ‘get to know me’ post where you get to look back on the kind of person I was in high school… something that only a few people know.  I can’t say I’m a completely different person, but there have been a few changes here and there.

if you knew me in high school

if you knew me in high school…

I was in the advanced math class, for three years – until I decided not to advance to Calculus and took Statistics… and aced it.  Yep, I was a math nerd.

if you knew me in high school…

I did not care how I dressed.  To be fair, half the time I needed a uniform for shop anyway, but I probably could’ve worn nicer jeans and sweatshirts…

if you knew me in high school…

You either called me Tabby or Kiwi (some still do).

if you knew me in high school…

I stuck with the same group of friends.  Loyal and true.

if you knew me in high school…

My best friend and I were inseparable.  Granted, we don’t live in the same town anymore and, you know, life happens, but when we get together it’s like nothing changed.

if you knew me in high school…

I never went against the rules, even if they were dumb (seriously, banning hoodies?)

if you knew me in high school…

I wanted to be a librarian/writer.  I was always writing fiction stories in my notebooks, more often than taking actual notes…

if you knew me in high school…

I was that student who actually did homework in study hall.

if you knew me in high school…

I was generally a quiet student, but there was a time I remember getting upset with my classmates for harassing a student and another time when they were just being overly immature.  I’m not saying I flipped out or anything, but they shut right up and the two teachers got a kick out of it.

if you knew me in high school…

I could be a teacher’s pet… depending on the teacher.  I actually really got along with the majority of my teachers.  I got along better with them than a quarter of my classmates really…

if you knew me in high school…

Somehow you knew me, but I didn’t know a good bunch of you.  I mean, there were only 142 students in my graduating class and I couldn’t recognize quite a few of them.  (Perks of having a unique name I guess.)

Well, looking back I can think of only a few of these that have changed.  It’s up to you to guess which ones, ha.  I’m not close to any class reunions yet, but 10 years ago I was a freshman… so it’s not that far off.  It seems like only yesterday my best friend and I were bursting out in High School Musical songs in shop…

How have you changed since high school?

I “Love” Winter Tag

Do I love winter?  No, not really.  However there are some things I do like about winter, but overall my hatred of the freezing temperatures and snowy, icy messes outweighs the good points.  This is the reason I will one day move south… once I’m able to afford it and scope out some towns in the state I’m interested in.

Until that time, I have to live up in the crazy weather that we deal with in New England… the area of the country where you wear a complete winter outfit in the morning and in the afternoon you’re in shorts sipping a lemonade.

I was tagged by alexandra write now to do the I Love Winter Tag, and I thank her for tagging me!  I love doing tag posts once in a while, and it’s been a while.  With that said, I present the I Love Winter Tag!

i love winter tag

  • Favorite Lip Product: Sun Shades Lip Balm… perfect for the chapped lips of winter.
  • Favorite Drink: a nice scalding hot cup of tea or a salted caramel hot chocolate from Dunkin’.
  • Favorite Nail Polish: Ha, yeah… like I wear nail polish.  Nope.
  • Favorite Candle: Fun fact, I don’t like candles that much… but I do like anything that smells like cinnamon. So, cinnamon or apple cinnamon.
  • Favorite Attraction: Well, I used to really enjoy sledding at the big hill on the west end of town.
  • Favorite Accessory: My visor-beanies.  They’re perfect for covering up my ears and keeping my head warm.  My favorite one is my Call of Duty MW3 one… which is funny because I don’t play that game.
  • Favorite Candy: Witor’s Chocolates
  • Favorite Movie: For a Christmas movie it’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas… no questions asked. As for a non-Christmas movie I’d have to say… Mean Creek.
  • Favorite Blush: Not a make-up girl… only when I absolutely have to.
  • Favorite Thing: I love it when people leave up their Christmas trees and the lights outside their homes.  It’s always very pretty, especially after a quiet snowfall.

So that’s it for the tag!  My ‘victims’ for this tag are listed below:

The Giraffe Files

99+ Sly Thoughts

JP, Declassified

Fangirling Owl

2016 Reading Challenge!

2016 reading challenge

I mentioned in my Goals for 2016 post that I was considering doing a Reading Challenge I had seen a page post on Facebook, since one of my goals this year is to read more books.  I was going to take another look at that particular challenge when I had gotten an email from my local library with, you guessed it, a reading challenge!

The reading list is quite longer than the one I was planning on doing, but that’s not a bad thing.  I actually feel like this one is more of a challenge so it will definitely be more satisfying to complete that list (if I can).  I actually noticed it’s the same list as the one found on Popsugar.

So why does it matter if I do this challenge through my library or not?  Well, doing this challenge with my library will allow me to earn points for each book I read.  The points add up to go towards raffle tickets to win a prize (they don’t say what it is).

library reading challenge 2016

So there is the challenge shown above.  I’ve looked at it a few times and have considered which books I’ll read for some of the categories.  Funny thing is a few of these can be covered by the Harry Potter books, but I’ll try to steer away from those since I’ve read them numerous times.

But if the shoe fits…

I’ll be sure to make updates as I go through the list, maybe with book reviews.  If I happen to review a book I read for this list, I’ll be sure to mention it.  At at the end of the year when I turn in my sheet I’ll post the results of whether I was able to complete the challenge or if I came a few books shy.

Are you participating in any challenges this year?

Extra News!

I have decided to put the other three completed blog planning worksheets on Etsy, as a way to help with some of the costs for my blog.  To get a four-pack PDF blog planning kit – including a social media schedule, monthly blog maintenance checklist, idea checklist and the post content planner – just click the banner below or on the sidebar!  Thank you!

Achievement Unlocked! [free printable!]

Guess what?

As of yesterday I have accomplished one of my goals for this year!

Yeah, I know… that was quick.  Quite surprising too, considering I’m one of the best procrastinators I know.  This was a goal I didn’t think I’d end up doing first, but something just hit me and I went all for it.  What was the goal?

Make my own blog planner.

I started it on the 2nd around 8:30pm.  The time matters because my mom and I were out doing errands and at the bookstore for most of the day.  I had no intentions of starting it that night, but when I got home I wanted to test out InDesign to see if I could get used to it and next thing I knew it was four hours later and I had just about the entire planning worksheet done.

I didn’t actually finish the worksheet until last night.  Man, was I excited when it was finished.  I guess that’s what you feel though when you teach yourself a new program and make something from it.  I can only hope it’s that easy when I go to learn Adobe After Effects.

So what is this blog planning worksheet?  It’s basically a content planner for a post you want to upload.  Yes, you!  I say that because I am giving it out as a free printable in hopes it will help some other bloggers who want to organize their posts, you know, organize their posts.  It’s kind of a good way to make sure you don’t miss a thing before hitting the ‘publish’ button.

indesign planner

I do plan on making more worksheets, in fact, I made two more today.  The only thing I’m battling with is whether I should put them up on Etsy together as a little kit for bloggers (because there are so many already).  I guess the good thing about mine is it’s more for beginner bloggers. The sheets are easy and don’t include things like blog stats or income sheets, since most new bloggers are not keeping track of that right away.

GET THE worksheet HERE

The particular sheets I’m thinking about doing in this kit are an idea checklist, social media schedule for promoting new and old posts, and a monthly blog schedule for those who have a lot of posts written and want to schedule them for certain days.

Whatever I decide, I’m happy to have achieved a goal and have something that not only I can use, but anyone who is reading this post and wants to grab this worksheet!

2016, I’m kicking your butt already!

Goals for 2016

my 2016 goals

Well the other night I rang in the New Year the best way possible…

By sleeping into it.

Yes, I crashed at 10pm New Year’s Eve and I have no regrets.  I was just so exhausted the entire day.  I think the only time I was awake was just after work when my mom and I ‘celebrated’ by putting up the Christmas tree we bought after Christmas.  Let’s just say we’re having our own mom-daugther Christmas in February because this year was just… weird.

Anyway, last year I changed my whole ‘I’m not going to make new years goals’ thing, so I guess I’ll keep it up and set some new goals for the new year.  I realize you can set goals anytime of the year, but it’s kind of cool keeping a list of goals to accomplish in a particular year.  So here they are… my 2016 goals:

1.) Regulate smoothies into my diet

I got a blender for Christmas and I could really do with more fruits and vegetables in my diet.

2.) Walk more

I walk 1-1.5 miles at least 5 times a week, but I’ve added to that since I usually have to walk to work on weekdays.  I really do like walking places and think I’d like to use that as a mode of transportation more often… in low-traffic areas, that is.

3.) Start doing yoga

I have a yoga mat and DVD that are just sitting here in the house unused.  I wanted to get into it early last year… or the year before that, I’m not sure which.  In any case, I think yoga would be a good form of exercise for me and would probably really help with my backaches.

4.) Learn more about nutrition

Since I’ll be trying to make a healthier diet, I’d like to learn more about the nutrients that are going into my body.  I know some from a science class I had my final year of college, but self-study usually has a better outcome of learning.

1.) Make my own blog planner

I’ve seen and tried out different planners this past year, but none of them seem to all combine elements I’d really use.  So I’m getting it out, in January, to create my own blog planner and hopefully make it a printable for the site.

2.) Interact with more bloggers

I’m okay with making comments on blogs here and there, but I really want to get to know other bloggers and make some new connections/friends.  I mean, we have something in common already, don’t we?

3.) Reach 10,000 blog views

I got up to 7.500 this year, which is pretty awesome I’d say.  So this year I’d like to see if I could possibly get just 2,500 more views to reach that 10K mark.  I’d be so grateful if my blog got to that point!

1.) Make a recipe book of my favorite smoothie recipes

I want to get creative and make a scrapbook of recipes, starting with smoothies (since that’s all I can make at this point).  I’ve started to experiment with my blender and different ingredients, so I want to keep track of the ones I like and keep them all together in one spot.

2.) Do another Bible study

I really enjoyed getting deeper in the Bible with my study on the book of James, so this year I want to make sure I do another study – either independent or with my mom… or both.

3.) Read more books

I slacked on reading in 2015 so this year I want to make up for it by reading more.  It relaxes me and takes me to new places.  I mean, I’ll reread a new books, but I am looking forward to getting some new books and reading those unread books on my shelf.  I might even do the reading challenge that’s below.

2016 reading challenge

4.) Give people only homemade birthday cards

I enjoyed making birthday cards over the past three months, so I think I’ll keep it up and just do all homemade cards for family and friends this year.

1.) Remake my videography highlight reel.

I mean, my reel is good and all (I did get an interview from it) but I’d like to improve it and make it just a little better than it is.

2.) Make a sports videography highlight reel

I have one for general videos, but if I’m ever going to get into sports filming/editing I need to up my game and make a special sports highlight reel.

3.) Organize my emails

I have so much clutter and subscription emails I need to go through. I just need to take a day and go through each account (there’s about 4-5) and sort emails that I’m saving and unsubscribe from a few email newsletters.

4.) Organize photos

My mom and I have a tote box full of photos and we always say we’re going to go through them.  I think we both need to do that this year – just take a few hours and go through them and organize them in some way so it’s easy to find them. Maybe we can even make a few scrapbooks.

5.) Save money

I still need a car, and just an emergency savings account in general.  Now that I’m working again I should be able to save some money each month (my dad will approve of this goal).

6.) Learn to cook at least 5 meals

I’m not a cook, unless cereal counts.  So I think it’s time I finally stepped up to the oven and learned to prepare meals… on my own.

1.) Learn Adobe After Effects for text animation

I’d like to add some cool text effects, or a cool moving graphic, at the end of my videos so I’m going to have a friend of mine help me to learn this program.  Plus it’ll be good for my resume.

2.) Learn basic French

I have the stinking Rosetta Stone program so I really need to get on it.  I’ve done a few basic lessons already, but I can’t speak many sentences.  So I’ll be looking into learning this language in any way possible this year because it’s helpful to be bilingual!

3.) Improve photo/video editing skills

My skills are good, but there’s always room for improvement.  Always.

I feel good about these goals.  In fact, I just feel good about this year in general.  2016 is going to be a great year and I can’t wait to see what God has in store over the next twelve months!

Happy New Year everyone!

What are your goals/resolutions?
