Happy 10th, High School Musical

Can you believe it?  On this day ten years ago one of the biggest movie franchises hit Disney Channel – High School Musical.

I can’t remember the day in particular, but I remember seeing the movie with my mom and cousin… and loving it.  I remember that I was a freshman in high school, and I didn’t know it then, but the newest Disney franchise would premiere its third and final installment – High School Musical: Senior Year – during my actual senior year.  How cool is that?

Most teenagers would’ve probably been embarrassed to admit they watched High School Musical the night of its premiere because, well, it was on Disney Channel.  I learned something all those years ago… a lot of teenagers actually do watch Disney.  I get it, we grew up with the classic Disney movies – Lion King, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, etc. – so it’s not that hard to think that we still enjoyed the Disney Channel shows.

I thought High School Musical would be just like any other movie, but for the following weeks of my freshman year I often heard other students of all grades (usually girls) singing the hit songs from the movie.  In fact, I think if my high school had a drama club, we would’ve eventually put on a production of the musical.  I was not as vocal, but for weeks the only CD I listened to on the bus ride home was my HSM soundtrack (yes, I said CD).

What I really like about High School Musical is that it’s a modern-day Grease.  Don’t get me wrong, it will never replace Grease, but it’s not going away any time soon.  This is the movie nerd talking in me, but when you look at both of these movies and break them down, there are a lot of similarities.  I won’t go into details because that will just bore you, but trust me, they’re there.

So here we are, ten years after the premiere of one of Disney Channel’s biggest musicals.  I still can’t believe it’s been ten years – a good amount of my cousins weren’t even alive ten years ago!  Heck, High School Musical is older than the iPhone!  Think about that for a minute…

Yeah, exactly.

In one way it feels like the movie has been out forever, but on the other hand it feels like just yesterday I was in high school.  Weird, huh?

Is anyone going to watch the cast reunion on Disney tonight during the movie?  I might.  I think it’s awesome they’re doing that, but it bugs me that Zac Efron isn’t a part of it.. oh well.

Happy 10th Anniversary High School Musical!
