Why I’m Ready to Throw My Computer Out the Window

I try to keep up an optimistic front here on my space of the internet, as I try to do in my life away from the blog, however I really feel the need to vent some frustration right now concerning a piece of technology… my MacBook Pro.

macbook pro

I’ve been a Mac user since 2006-2007 when I got my white Macbook and have never looked back to Windows.  In 2013, only two years ago, I got this MacBook Pro after my faithful white Macbook died completely on me.  I took into careful consideration the amount of memory, RAM and whatnot would be on my new laptop before I got it and well, spent a good sum of money on it.

I was pleased with it up until this past June.

For some reason, that I cannot pinpoint (and neither can the people at the Apple Store) my computer seems to be reading that my shift keys are always being pressed.  This is an issue because when I go to turn on my computer it loads up in Safe Boot.  I can bypass it by pressing the option key when it turns on, however that doesn’t help me much afterwards while trying to surf the web, write a blog post, click a link or edit photos and videos.

I’ve been bringing my computer in and out of the Apple Store since June (even more so in the last 6-7 weeks) and they’ve replaced the top case twice (which I only had to pay for once, thankfully).  I literally just got my computer back yesterday and it worked fine at the store and when I got home, but I go to turn on my computer toady and guess what?  It’s reading that the shift key is on…

I honestly have no idea what to do that this point.  The Apple Store is a 45-minute drive from my town and every time I do bring it in, the stupid computer works just fine!  I don’t have the funds to get a new computer at the moment and quite frankly, I’m ready to just throw my computer out the window.

I’ve researched some options of remapping the internal keyboard to disable the shift keys, but I’m wary of downloading the application despite its good reviews.  Is it too much to ask for a computer that works properly without any issues and without me having to waste my time and gas going down to the Apple Store every week?

If anyone has had this issue and can help, I’d really appreciate it.

currently // september

I’m in denial that September is nearly over.  I think I just got used to it being September!  I’m not ready for it to be October yet… not at all.  The days are just going way too fast and it’s freaking me out.

In other news, my room is still clean and organized!  This is really huge for me because all my rooms in the past have looked like a hurricane blasted through there.  But it worked for me then… I knew where everything was.  I guess loving how my room looks clean made all the difference for me to keep it that way!

Loving // my room… still!

Excited // for the job interview I have Monday.  I’m nervous as well, but I’d really like to get this job.

Hoping // that I’ll get this job… but I guess that’s in God’s hands, right?

Drinking // I’m getting back into my salted caramel hot chocolate ways now that it’s officially fall… of course I’m still enjoying caramel iced coffee before it gets too cold out.

Wearing // jeans and a t-shirt… we have the perfect weather for it!

Watching // a whole bunch of shows.  I’m keeping up with Switched at Birth and Young & Hungry at the moment.  MasterChef just ended, and I was rather disappointed… only because I thought the other finalist did a better job.

Happy 3rd Birthday orangeowldiaries!

After two previous failed attempts at keeping a blog, I decided to try a third time and that time I decided to start completely new with a new address and name.  I wanted a place to share my thoughts and opinions where anyone could read them, which is kind of scary at times, but I still went through with it.  Thus, three years ago, orangeowldiaries was born!

blog birthday

The blog started out with posts where I pretty much just shared little moments of my day – kind of like a diary (hence the name… sort of).  I would actually post 2 or 3 times a day, but not everyday.  It really depended on what happened that day and if any of it was really worth sharing.  Obviously, that’s not really the case anymore.

At some point I started sharing more relevant happenings in my life – the ones that people could really relate to.  Or if there was a topic I really wanted to touch on, I’d write a post about that.  I also enjoyed sharing my reviews on movies or books (which I still do) as well as any school writing assignments that I was proud of.

orangeowldiaries layout 2013

There were also quite a few looks over the past three years (as you can see in the two examples above and below).  While I don’t have screenshots of all the past looks, you can see that I liked playing around with different themes for the right feel for my blog.  At one point, I know that I had a dark background with light text, but that didn’t last too long.

orangeowldiaries 2014

orangeowldiaries layout 2014

If you look hard enough you can also see that I didn’t use my real name in the beginning.  I simply went by Orange Owl.  I made the change of signing my name when I started to connect my blog to Twitter and Facebook… since the people there would see my name anyway.

Then last year I took the jump and bought the domain name to get rid of the ‘.wordpress’ in my blog’s URL and not too long after bought the customization upgrade so I could change the colors of the Sela theme to match my blog name.

Blogging on the orangeowldiaries for the past three years is something that I really love doing.  I can connect with new people and I’ve learned a handful of new skills doing this (including teaching myself Photoshop for blog images).  I can say that this is something I can see myself continuing throughout the years.

I want to say thank you to all my readers who put up with my random lifestyle blog posts and continue to come back!  Here’s to three years of blogging, and more to come!

Mini Self-Portrait Session 2015

Photography is one of my hobbies.  Though some people say I should really advertise and put myself out there to make money doing this, I’m hesitant because I know there are so many other people out there better than I am… at least I think so.

Anyway, yesterday was a gorgeous day out and I was wearing  brand new shirt that I’ve been waiting to wear (since it was too hot to wear it last month).  I couldn’t resist, I had to get my camera out of its bag and go for a short self-portrait session.  I did start off just taking pictures inside, but like I said, it was too nice outside to not take some pictures out there!

Self-portrait sessions are something I like doing at least once a year.  One of the reasons I like to do this is because first of all… it’s fun!  Second of all, I don’t have access to any other photographers to take my pictures for me (for free anyway), so this way I’m saving myself some money.  And lastly, I get experience by doing my own photos and getting to experiment with different poses and whatnot.

tabby 2015 1

tabby 2015 3

As with any photo session – whether it’s sports, lifestyle, self portraits, or still-life photography  – there are hundreds of pictures taken.  Sadly, only a few make the final cut.  I found that with this session I didn’t take nearly as many as I have in the past (due to a limited time), but I still ended up cutting at least half of the photos out… if not more.

tabby 2015 5

tabby 2015 6

Unfortunately this time, there was a focus problem with a few ones that I particularly liked, but since they were not up to my standards I didn’t bother with them.  I was really disappointed because when I looked at them on my camera they looked fine and like they’d be great pictures. Next time I’ll be a little more attentive to the focal points before I hit the timer.

tabby 2015 7

I know some of these might not be my best work, but I don’t think they’re too bad for an impromptu photo-shoot.  I’ll try to plan a better session soon for some better photos, and maybe even try to recruit a friend to take some photos to save me the trouble of using the self-timer function.  On the other hand, I can cross off ‘do a new self-portrait session’ off my 25 Before 25 list since technically, this was a self-portrait session.

Also, the rest of the pictures from my mini session can be found on my Natural Chance Productions & Photography Facebook page.

Faith in the Future | Blog-tember

Monday, Sept. 21: A favorite quote/expression and how it has impacted you.

faith future

I remember the first time I saw this quote – it was one of those wood wall hangings my mom’s friend bought for the restaurant she works at.  It was the one that really stuck with me because of the power of the truth in those words.

This quote is something for me to remember every second of my life, especially in the rough times where it doesn’t seem like things are going right.  Right now, for example, with the rough patch I’m going through now that I’m out of school and looking for a job in my field.  So far, it’s been a bust, but knowing that God has my future in His hands is the most comforting thing for me during this time because I know that He’ll open the right one for me.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)

But this really goes for every part of my life.  I have no idea where I’ll be living in 5 years, who I’ll end up marrying, if I’ll even get married, how many jobs I’ll go through… I have no idea what will happen.  Sure, I can try to plan, but ultimately God is laying down my path and I’m more than eager to see what He has in store.

We’re going to have stressful points in our lives where we feel like there’s no way out, there’s no doubt about that.  Of course, there’s no point in worrying about it either.  Worrying doesn’t do anything other than freak us out more.  We just need to put our faith and trust in God and know that He’s in control and everything is going to work out.

“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27)

Friday Five: Blogger Love v.33

This week went by at a decent pace, considering when I woke up Tuesday I thought it was Saturday (no idea why).  I was able to escape the house for a while and visit some former coworkers and a classmate this week, which I really enjoyed.  I also got lost trying to find my friend’s house… because Siri is terrible and gave me the address for the wrong city.

I also upgraded to iOS 9… has anyone else?  And what do you think of it?  I’m personally digging the new font, but I’m upset that the emojis haven’t updated yet.

Obsessed? Me? Not at All…

Thursday, September 17: Just for fun, your latest obsession. What can you not get enough of these days?

The day of obsessions… oh boy.  Let me just say off the bat that when I like something, a lot, I’m very prone to start obsessing about it for a good while.  Sometimes when one particular obsession has been gone for a few months, it will sprout back up again for no reason and I find myself entrapped once again.  Usually, this occurs with certain books, shows or movies that I am a fan of… that’s what I get for joining different fandoms.

I’m not proud of this in the least, but it’s just something that happens.  I mean, it’s not like it controls my life to the point where I don’t do anything else other than obsessing over that particular fandom. I just have a point in time where I binge a show I’ve seen a few times or watch a particular movie 7 times in a row.

Recently, I was obsessed with the new Disney movie Descendants (if you didn’t already know).  I’m not quite as obsessed with the movie as I was before, but I won’t lie and say that I’m not checking back for new fan-fiction updates every few days.

But that’s what my obsession is right now – fan-fiction.  I’ve been finding myself going back and reading old stories that are lodged in my favorites as well as reading ones that I wrote in the past (I cringed at about 90% of them).  All I can say is thank God most of mine are not on fanfiction.net because my early days of writing were not pretty.

That’s my honest, and slightly embarrassing, obsession right now… fan-fiction.

Graze Box Sampler Review

graze box

I had been getting a set of emails sent to me over the past few weeks about the graze box snack subscription.  It was offering and entirely free sampler box, which is pretty awesome, but I kept putting it off… well, more like forgetting since I didn’t want to sign up through my phone.  I did eventually order my free box last week and waited patiently for it to come in.

Yesterday it finally came in and I took no time to dive right into trying out the four snacks they sent me – Smart Blondie, Tuscan Pesto Kern Pops, Chili Lime Cashews and Stars and Stripes.

Smart Blondie (cinnamon raisin blondie with whole grains and coconut oil)

graze box smart blondie

This was the snack I was very excited to try, as I figured it’d be the one snack I’d really end up liking.  That wasn’t the case.  I enjoyed the first bite, but after that I actually didn’t care too much for the healthy blondie treat and ended up not finishing it once I ate the raisins out of it.  While I didn’t hate it, I definitely would not want it again in a future graze snack box.

Tuscan Pesto Kern Pops (cheddar cheese popped corn kernels and mini basil breadsticks)

graze box kernals

I knew right away I’d like the basil breadsticks in this little package, but the cheddar kern pops… I actually enjoyed them!  Again, I can’t say they were my favorite snack, but I’d put this particular one on the ‘maybe’ list for a future box.  I just wish there were more of the basil breadsticks!

Chili Lime Cashews (roasted cashew nuts with chili lime seasoning)

graze box chili lime cashews

As much as I love plain, salted cashews I was wary of trying this snack.  I actually hesitated before trying it, only to find that it wasn’t something that bothered me.  I’m on the fence with this snack – I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either.  As for if I’d like it in a future box, I’m leaning towards no… but I won’t rule it out entirely.

Stars and Stripes (mini blackcurrant stars, raspberry strings and blueberry flavored cranberries)

graze box stars and stripes

At first glance, I thought I’d like this snack, but then I saw that there were cranberries in it.  I don’t have a problem with cranberries, but I’ve never actually tried them before.  Seeing as they are blueberry flavored, it took the edge off on trying them.  Of course, I also enjoyed the blackcurrant stars and raspberry strings.  This snack is much like eating a healthy version of fruit snacks like Gushers or Welch’s fruit gummy snacks.  By far, this was the best snack in the sampler box and I literally want it in every future box I get from graze.com!

It was about halfway through trying the snacks that I thought, ‘Hey, I should’ve made a video of me trying the snacks.’  But since I had already tried two of them, I knew eating them again on camera wouldn’t show my true reaction of trying them for the first time. Oh well, next time.

As for graze box, I am willing to try more snacks from them when I can afford the subscription each week/month.  Once I can, you can definitely expect me to review more of the graze box snacks!

Friday Five: Blogger Love v.32

I find it funny how watching an episode of one of your favorite shows can make you hate the series, or at least the writers.  I was watching Ally McBeal while eating breakfast and despite knowing what would happen that episode, I still said I hate the show and the writers.  But I guess when a show can make you laugh, cry and hate the writers all in one episode it’s a good show, right?

I also hate that the Patriots won last night.  I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand Brady.  Or that team.

Bring on the Bills and Giants’ games on Sunday!

Anyway, here are a few of my favorite blog posts from this week for y’all to enjoy!

My Fall Bucket List

I seem to be making a lot of bucket lists this year, more so than actually doing the things on them, ha!  Of course, some things take time, so I can’t complain much.  But I do need to get on the ball and get things crossed off my lists.  Before I do that though, here are a few fall-specific things I want to do in the upcoming season.

my fall bucket list

I realize that fall doesn’t officially begin until later this month, and with this heat, who would think it’s fall anyway?  But I have noticed that despite the heat, the leaves are beginning to change around my parts, and to me the months of September, October and November are the fall season.

Some of these tasks are ones I was planning on doing this year anyway while others are normal (watching football!).  This is more to make sure I can enjoy this season thoroughly, although I’m sure I’ll think of more things I want to do later on.

I don’t have many planned here, but that makes it easier for me to knock all of them out.  I think I might even get one of them done later today!

What’s on your list of things to do this fall?

Fall Is the Fairest of Them All | Blog-tember

fall my favorite season

Tuesday, Sept. 8: Tell us about your favorite season. Why is it your favorite and what does it say about you?

I think I can honestly say I love spring, summer and fall about equally since there are different qualities to each season that I enjoy.  But having to choose, I’d say fall is my favorite season even if it does mean that winter is on the way.

There are quite a number of reasons I love fall – the colors are simply amazing. salted caramel hot chocolate. the smells of crisp leaves and wood stoves. Thanksgiving. caramel everything. apple harvesting. candy corn. bonfires to keep warm. pumpkin picking. my mom and dad’s birthdays. hay rides on a chilly night. town fairs. The Big E. cuddle weather. beanies. football season. crunchy leaves.

Other than football, we all know the main reason any person would love fall – the bugs go away!  I can’t deny that this is one of the top reasons I look forward to the months of September, October and November.

There’s one more aspect of fall I’ve come to love over the past few years, and that is the fashion of fall.  I can’t wait for this heat to break so I can start wearing thin long sleeve shirts, hoodies, my favorite pair of jeans, leather boots, my leather jacket and last but not least, my orange beanie.  I can’t deny that I love my own personal fall fashion each year as well as of those around me.  The fashion is perfect because there aren’t people wearing barely anything and at the same time, no one looks like a giant, walking marshmallow.

And, that’s it everyone!  Those are the main reasons I think fall is the best season around.  I will honestly say I’m anxiously awaiting for fall to arrive because I am looking forward to this humid heat going away, as well as the bugs.

Of course, we all know I just can’t wait to wear my leather jacket and orange beanie!

What’s YOUR favorite season?

Behind My Blog Name | Blog-tember Challenge

I said on Friday that I was going to start the Blog-tember Challenge today, even though it has been going on for a week.  The thing is that I had some posts scheduled for last week and I didn’t want to push them off until next month – that’s why I’m starting this challenge a week late.

Today’s prompt is to tell how we came up with our blog names, which is a good easy one for me to start off this challenge with.  So, here’s how I came up with the name, orangeowldiaries, for my blog.

behind my blog name

It was a dark and stormy night…

Wait.  No it wasn’t.

Or was it?

You know what, I don’t remember.  Moving on…

The truth is, there is no elaborate story behind the name of my blog.  I tell most people that it’s because orange is my favorite color, the owl is my favorite animal and since my blog is like a public diary… well, there you go.  It’s actually not like that though.  It wasn’t just something random that I chose because of my favorite color and animal.

What really happened was I had already had another diary-like blog, which is no longer existent, and I hadn’t been active for a few months, but I was looking to start again.  A fresh start.  So I needed a new name.

Since I was looking at this blog as a means of public journaling, I realized I would probably not use my actual journal to write in anymore (though I hadn’t written in it for a year anyway).  I took one look at my journal, and I knew what the name would be.

Orange Owl Diaries.

orange owl journal

Maybe you can guess from that picture why it hit me so fast.  My journal, or diary, was orange and had a picture of an owl on it.  Pretty awesome, huh?

And that is pretty much the story behind how I came up with my blog name.  I really like it because it was a name that just hit me, plus I have a personal attachment to it.

Is there an interesting story behind your blog name?

Transforming My MacBook Into A Desktop

macbook to desktop transformation

This idea first came to me a little over a year ago, when I wanted to get a stand for my MacBook Pro to sit on and an external iMac G4 keyboard to use optionally at my desk.  I had no real reason for wanting to do this, which is probably why I never did.

As such, with the issues my MacBook has had the past few months with the keyboard reading that the shift key is always being pressed (when it’s not) I’ve needed to outsource to an external keyboard to type.  Unfortunately the only one I had up until last week was my tiny bluetooth keyboard for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook… pretty hard to write blog posts on that, let me tell you.  So I took matters into my own hands and bought a cheap external keyboard and stand from Amazon.com and turned my MacBook Pro into a desktop of sorts.

The stand I bought for this mini-project is the Cosmos Black Laptop/iPad stand which only cost about $14, and despite that it looks like it might not hold a regular size MacBook Pro, it’s not problem for this little accessory.  I also got a Logitech keyboard for under $10, which beat out paying $23 plus shipping for an iMac G4 keyboard (though I still really want one… it just makes a cool sound when you type on it).

macbook before

cosmos ipod laptop stand

logitech wired keyboard

macbook after

I did actually have one issue when putting all of this together, which was that the stand was just a bit too long for my desk to fit both the stand and keyboard.  Luckily, there is a small gap behind my desk and a lower ridge (like a 11/2 inch shelf) on the wall where part of the stand can securely sit on, which gives me enough room to place the keyboard.

There is another positive side to doing this with my laptop, other than not having to deal with the shift-key issue, which is that supposedly keeping my laptop on a riser will help to improve my posture while I work on my computer.  I can’t say for sure that it will help me or not, I tend to slouch even at a normal desktop computer, but I guess we’ll see what happens.

In the meantime, I love how awesome this setup looks on my desk!
