Nem means No

I have another Hungarian word for y’all today because I literally cannot think of anything else for today’s letter.  This is one of the first two words I ever learned in this language – nem.

It’s pronounced just as it’s spelled, which makes it easy.  Unfortunately this isn’t the case for the rest of the Hungarian language, which is one of the reasons why I only know three words – yes, no, and cat.  I also know how to say ‘I love you’ in Hungarian thanks to my grandfather and great uncle who taught me that years before they passed away.

I don’t actually say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ in Hungarian all that much.  Now that I’m thinking about it, I might actually start saying that once in a while, just to keep things fresh.  Everyone says ‘yes’ and ‘no’, but not everyone (in America) says ‘igan’ and ‘nem’.

Though I may never learn to really speak the Hungarian language, just using a few common words here and there makes me feel like I’m keeping my grandfather and great uncle close to my heart.  They were truly great men, and it was always a joy to hear them speak in their native tongue to each other when I drove them to Bible study on Wednesday mornings.

Remembers friends… Nem means No.
