The best way to ‘get back’ at someone who mistreats you is by showing them kindness.

First of all, it frustrates them more if you don’t react the way they expect you to.  They might be confused and try again in another way, but if you either don’t react or show them even more kindness despite their actions, they’ll give up.  They might think something is wrong with you, but really there is something right with you.

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.  If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.” – Luke 6:27-29

This really comes in handy when you work with the public, trust me.  Sometimes people get upset at the employees for no reason, but if the employee gets upset then they’ll have more of a reason to give you a hard time in the future.  If the employee remains calm and shows kindness to the customer/patron, then they might realize they are out of line and be nicer next time.  They might not, it might just be who they are, but no matter how someone treats you, it is best to show kindness and compassion.

I usually try to keep in mind that the person might be having a bad day – it’s not an excuse, but it helps me understand where they’re coming from.
