As I’m sure most people are aware of, libraries are a great place to hold events. From lectures to movies to craft sales, and such things like that, we do it all. We also play host to live animals from time to time… and such an event happened the other night at work.
I really had no idea what to expect with this event, only that there were apparently going to be some live birds and reptiles in our community room for the event. All I can say gauging from the patrons’ reactions was that it was great and now I’m wishing I had been able to sit in on the event while I was working. I was able to stop down for a brief moment to see a small python be shown around the room, but I wasn’t going as far as to pet him.
At the end of the event I was able to see two of my coworkers hold the larger snake that was brought in, which didn’t scare me as much as I thought it would (again, I still wouldn’t touch it with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole).
But what I really wished I had seen were more of the owls. I didn’t know they had brought some in until a coworker told me about them. At the end of the event I asked one of the caretakers if they’d bring one out for me to see and get a picture of, and she did. It made my night!
Isn’t she so cute?!?!
And that is my tale of being within three feet of these normally wild animals (that are in rehabilitation for injuries, abuse, and such).
